Making Energy Easy

Andrew Reeves

The Australian Energy Regulator’s price comparison website can help you get the best electricity or gas deal for your home.

Energy Made Easy, www.energymadeeasy.gov.au, is a free and independent government website, which reduces the legwork in finding the right energy offer for your household.

Navigating the many energy offers

It pays to shop around. Depending on where you live, the difference in price between the most and least expensive single rate offer can be as much as several hundred dollars over a year.

By entering your postcode, you can immediately see and compare all of the gas and electricity offers available in your area.

When you enter your usage, as shown on a recent bill, into the price comparator you will get an estimate of the average annual cost of the offers available to you.

If you do not have a bill, you can use a figure based on a similar sized household.

The price comparator tool is only available to energy customers in states or territories where the National Energy Retail Law has commenced (NSW, ACT, SA, TAS). Consumers in other jurisdictions can follow the links to state-based tools.

Make savings by thinking about energy efficiency

The Energy Made Easy website also allows you to compare your energy use with the average usage of nearby households of the same size.

For instance, if you are a family of four living in Newcastle you can check the energy usage of a typical four-person household in the 2300 postcode.

The results can help you think about reducing your bill by making energy savings around your home.

Your rights as an energy consumer

Energy Made Easy provides key information about your rights as an energy consumer.

For instance, when you sign-up with an energy retailer you must be provided with clear information about the terms and conditions of the contract.

If consumers are having difficulty paying bills, they have a right to flexible payment options and access to hardship programs.

Retailers must also follow a number of steps before they can disconnect customers, to give people every chance to resolve problems.

With the protections of the Retail Law and the convenience of Energy Made Easy, it has never been easier for consumers to confidently compare, understand and control their energy service.
