Be in charge of your banking

How does your bank account work? Understand the account your pay goes into, costs and statements. Having online banking set up means you can check what is happening with your account. That way you can keep track of your money and who you're paying money to.

Keep your personal account Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) card somewhere so only you can find it. It’s never good to share your PIN number with others. The best thing to do is to remember your PIN, rather than writing it down where others may find it.

Protect yourself from scams

Sometimes you get a text or call from someone who says they are from an important organisation and that they need your bank details. They might  make cool offers like gift cards or rewards; they might even pretend to know you.

Never give your banking details or your PIN to anyone. If this has happened to your or your family, you can talk to someone who can help, See numbers below:
  • Your bank
  • Mob Strong Debt Help on 1800 808 488
  • The ACCC by calling the Indigenous Info Line on 1300 303 143
  • idcare.com.au or call 1800 595 160 if you think ID information has been taken.
Learn about scams, how to recognise and prevent them at the First Nations Foundation, Scamwatch and the Scams page on our website.

Be in charge of your tax

The Australian Government requires people earning money from a boss, to pay tax. You must provide your Tax File Number (TFN) to your boss and sign a Tax Declaration form so that you don't pay too much tax.

To learn more about how much tax you will pay and what tax deductions you can make as an ADF member, visit our Income Tax page on this website.

Did you know that the Australian Tax Office has specific help for First Nations people? There is lots of information on the First Nations page of the ATO website or you can call the ATO Indigenous helpline 13 10 30.
